  • 2 : FW 1939 332.01-337.03
  • 3 : FW 1939 337.04-338.03

Part 1: II.3 §1

The draft analysis of II.3 can be divided into five, essentially independent parts. These comprise an elaboration of Joyce's 1926 plans for the episode (see Letters, I, 7 June 1926), as emended in 1935 (see Letters, NLHW, 19 July 1935) and reconfigured in 1938. The five parts are:
  • (1) II.3 §1, the “Norwegian Captain”, the first ‘story’ from the ‘scene in the public’;
  • (2) II.3 §2-3, a shorter intermediate passage;
  • (3) II.3 §4-5, “Butt and Taff”, the second ‘story’;
  • (4) II.3 §6, H.C.E's ‘confession’, a kind of self-justification; and
  • (5) II.3 §7, ‘lights out in the village’ or ‘going to sleep’, originally intended as the end of Book II (see Letters, I, 8 November 1926) before being brought back into II.3 when, in August 1938, “MaMaLuJo” and a forgotten “Tristan and Isolde” were combined and rewritten to become the new II.4.

Section ONE: 1939 FW 309-331 (‘The Norwegian Captain’)

When the MS of Book III was dispatched to Faber and Faber in January 1936, Joyce was able to get back to Book II, specifically to 1. He had most of the pertinent notesheets (see §1.0χ below) already to hand, and may even have had some preliminary draft work done, but he could now concentrate on it, when circumstances allowed. In June 1936, T.S. Eliot brought back the MSS of part I and part III for retyping by Léon and the work on II.3 was again interrupted (see Letters, NLFF, 7 May, CJJ, 5 June and 12 July, 1936). Most of August-September was spent on holiday, during which he also had to deal with the upcoming English publication of Ulysses (by John Lane of the Bodley Head: see Letters, NLPL, 4 September 1936). He returned to Paris on 13 September 1936. Yet he did not resume intensive work until the end of October 1936 (see Letters, NLHW, 5 November, 1936).
